Sarah Vaughan was sometimes known as Sassy, with good reason: she was a brilliant singer, excellent pianist and consummate artist, beloved of beboppers Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker (she began her career in the bop-styled orchestras of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine) - and she didn’t suffer fools gladly. At her commercial peak, she was also a truly popular vocalist, enjoying 20 US top 40 hits. Now we celebrate her illustrious career – and current use of ‘Make Yourself Comfortable’ in a prominent TV ad starring Serena Williams – with the release of her Golden Hits!!! compilation on black and gold 180G vinyl. This classic collection covers her fruitful Mercury and EmArcy years of 1954-1961, a period during which she recorded all-time-great versions of ‘Autumn In New York’, ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’ and ‘Moonlight In Vermont’, and collaborated with the likes of Clifford Brown, Quincy Jones and Roy Haynes.
